Casa Viejo Chac

Deep in the heart of the Siian Kaan biosphere lies the sleepy little town of Punta Allen. Punta Allen is well known among fly fisherman and is the place to go if you are looking for the “grand slam”, landing a bonefish, tarpon and permit in one day. Established in 2008 by the late Manuel Chac, this quaint fly fishing lodge allows anglers to access the flats of Ascension bay at a very affordable rate. The expert guide team has worked with Fly Odyssey since 2008. Since then we have sent hundreds of anglers to Casa Viejo Chac and the flats fishing and overall experience has made it a Fly Odyssey flagship destination, and why we regularly host trips here year after year.

Fly Fishing

Ascension bay is known widely as the grand slam capital of the world. It is also a year around fishery, so every month of the year you’ll have an equal chance to target bonefish, tarpon and permit on fly. This is a highly focused permit destination and while there are bonefish, and tarpon around, the guides are expert permit hunters.

Ascension bay offers something for everyone whether you are an avid permit fisherman or relatively new to the sport. You can stalk schools of bonefish on foot or access the backwater lagoons in search of baby tarpon and snook.

The guides use locally made panga style boats to move in and out of the lagoons with ease. These boats are well made and perfect for their designed use although the preferred method for stalking fish is to jump out of the boat and stalk on foot, if you are in water shallow enough.

Due to its close proximity to the boca in the back of the lagoon as well as the sheltered mangrove ponds, it’s usually easier to get out of the wind than some destinations.

TRAVEL PLAN

The lodge is easily accessible via Cancun, which is a major hub for US and European flights. Transfer between Cancun and the lodge varies between four and six hours depending on road conditions in the Sian Kaan Biosphere. If the Biosphere road is in poor shape we arrange a van and boat transfer option which enables a quicker and more comfortable route to the lodge. Transportation to and from the lodge is provided in comfortable air-conditioned vans.

The locally run lodge provides clean and comfortable rooms, with basic twin share accommodation, air conditioning, bar and dining areas in a comfortable and relaxed setting.

Meals are prepared from local ingredients and feature local meats and produce, vegetables, and a well stocked bar. Breakfast each morning consists of local eggs, local fruits, and packed lunches daily.
