Nubian Flats

African Waters began exploring this diverse coastline in May 2013 and has since accumulated a wealth of experience and knowledge on this fishery, culminating in the upcoming tenth season in 2022. The Nubian Flats is not your typical fishing trip; it presents an opportunity for adventurous anglers to experience a unique setting, culture, and sense of adventure. The stark Nubian Desert, the friendly Sudanese people, and the electric blue of the Red Sea create an unforgettable backdrop that every angler should experience. We encourage guests to undertake this trip for the overall experience, not just the fishing.

We are fortunate to have a vast area to explore, and even after a decade, there are still areas that require further exploration, allowing us to distribute fishing pressure effectively. Each trip is unique, with our guides carefully planning out the itinerary based on the weather, new areas to explore, and guests’ objectives for their time with us.

Having thoroughly explored this diverse coastline in May 2013 and for another 10 weeks in 2014, Our good friends at African Waters are pleased to announce an annual professionally guided season on the Nubian Flats off the coast of Sudan. The striking Nubian Desert serves as a backdrop to the exceptionally hospitable Sudanese people and the vibrant electric blue waters of the Red Sea. Every angler should have the opportunity to witness this unforgettable scene.

Fly Fishing

The flats are primarily inhabited by titan and yellow margin triggers, which make up a large portion of the fishing in the area. With such an extensive area to fish, they make a concerted effort to keep the triggerfish uneducated by minimizing fishing pressure in each location. Other species available in the flats include GT’s, Bluefin, Barracuda, and Bohar. While Permit and bonefish are less predictable, there are still opportunities to target these species each week.

GT’s and Bluefin can be found on the flats and the edges, with some impressive specimens caught each week. Our extensive experience in the area has given us a greater understanding of where and when the GT’s are likely to present opportunities for shots on the flats. For those who prefer a more fast-paced and exciting fishing experience, there is the option to tease trevally species with a hookless plug from deep water to within casting range of the flat edge. Additionally, doggies are plentiful just a short distance from shore, and can be teased in and hooked in some cases.

The Nubian flats are home to some truly impressive bohar snapper, both in terms of size and quantity. A variety of grouper species can be found on the flat edges and offshore, all of which make for exciting fly rod targets.
